What is Drontal and who is it for?
DRONTAL® ORAL SUSPENSION for Puppies contains febantel and pyrantel to effectively kill gastrointestinal roundworms, whipworms and hookworms in puppies and young dogs up to one year of age.
Intestinal worms of dogs and cats can damage the health of your pet and can cause health issues in vulnerable people, especially children, so it is important to regularly de-worm your pet. Puppies are commonly infected before and after birth from their mother passing the worm larvae through the placenta or the maternal milk. Therefore it is usually appropriate to start a worming regime in puppies at 2 weeks of age, and worm every two weeks until the puppy is weaned.
Most young puppies should not need to be treated for tapeworms, making Drontal® Oral Suspension for Puppies a very suitable choice. Should a puppy need tapeworm treatment however, or if tablets are preferred, then Drontal® Plus Flavour Bone Shape is licensed for use in puppies from 2 weeks old. Drontal® Plus Flavour Bone Shape kills roundworms, whipworms, hookworms and tapeworms

What is the active ingredient in Drontal?
The active ingredients in DRONTAL® Oral Suspension for Puppies are pyrantel, which causes spastic paralysis of the parasite and allows it to be expelled by the gastrointestinal (GI) system using peristalsis, and febantel, which causes disruption to the metabolic processes of the parasite, resulting in death when its energy reserves are exhausted.
What does this ingredient do?
In this fixed combinationthe pyrantel and febantel act synergistically against nematodes (ascarids, hookworms and whipworms) of dogs. In particular, the spectrum of activity covers Toxocara canis, Ancyclostoma caninum and Trichuris vulpis. Published data are also available to confirm that Toxascaris leonina and Uncinaria stenocephala are also susceptible to this particular combination.

How do I use Drontal?
The recommended dose rates for puppies and young dogs up to one year of age are:
For a single oral administration, 15 mg/kg bodyweight febantel and 5 mg/kg bodyweight pyrantel (as embonate) corresponding to 14.4 mg/kg pyrantel embonate.
This is equivalent to 1 ml/kg bodyweight.
Through intrauterine (in the womb) and trans-mammary (in the mother's milk) infection, ascarid (roundworm) infestation may occur in dogs at a very early age.
For some animals, especially in case of severe infections, elimination of ascarids may be incomplete, and a potential risk of infections to humans cannot be excluded. Where epidemiologically appropriate, it is recommended that treatment should be started at 2 weeks of age and should be performed repeatedly at suitable intervals (for example every 2 weeks), until weaning.
Otherwise treatment should be based upon confirmed infection, for example the results of faecal examinations.
