Dogtor - Prescriptions

 

Certain medications that we need for our pets require a valid prescription from your veterinary surgeon before we can supply them. Veterinary medications that require a prescription are classified as a ‘POM-V’, which will be printed on the packaging.

 

How will I know if my pet’s medication requires a veterinary prescription?

If you are searching for a product via the categories, any medications that require a veterinary prescription will have a pen and notepad icon next to their name, as displayed below:

If you are searching for the product via the search bar at the top of the home page, then it will take you directly to the product description page. If the product you have selected requires a veterinary prescription then you will see red text above the product picture advising you of the need for a prescription, as shown below:

What do I need to do to buy a prescription medication for my pet?

It’s simple, just follow the easy steps below :

  1. First, ask your vet for a written prescription for your pet’s medication.
  2. Next, find the medication that you require on our website and select the quantity that matches your pet’s prescription.
  3. Then, purchase your medication.
  4. Finally, send us or upload a copy of your prescription, you can do this by via the following methods

Simply scan or take a photograph of your prescription and upload it directly to your Dogtor.vet account.

Don’t forget to make a note of your order number on the top of your prescription and then email a copy of your prescription to info@dogtor.vet

Once we have received a copy of your prescription and it has been checked by our vets to ensure that it meets the VMD regulations and is valid, we will be able to dispense and dispatch your order immediately.

How do I know if my prescription is valid?

To ensure that your pet’s prescription meets the VMD regulations, it will need to meet the following requirements:

  1. It must have been issued, signed and dated by your vet less than 6 months ago.
  2. You will need a separate prescription for each pet.
  3. Your pet’s prescription must clearly include the following details:

 

 Your pet’s details:

  • Your pet’s name.
  • Your pet’s species (e.g. cat, dog, hamster, rabbit).

 Your details:

  • Your name.
  • The address where your pet lives.

 Your vet’s details:

  • Your vet’s name.
  • The veterinary practice’s address and telephone number.
  • The RCVS registration number.
  • Your vet’s signature.
  • The practice stamp.

 Details of your pet's medication:

  • It’s registered name and/or the active ingredient/formula.
  • It must state that it’s for ‘veterinary use’ if it’s a human medication.
  • Dosage (e.g. mg or ml).
  • Route of administration (e.g. oral, topical.)
  • Repeats (this is the number of times it is authorized to be renewed).
  • Withdrawal time (if it’s for an animal for food production).
  • Any possible substitution names for the drug.

What if I suspect that my pet has had an adverse reaction to a medicinal product?

If you suspect you or your animal has suffered an adverse reaction from a veterinary medication, it is important to have this recorded. Please use this form to report the details to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.
